Coupons, happy hour and daily combos: offers that protect your margin

Promotions only help if they cannot be stacked, overspent or gamed. This is how SCALE Order picks the discount for an order, holds it while the order is open and prices daily combos fairly.

Key points

  • One promotion applies per order: the largest valid discount wins.
  • Usage limits and budgets are checked under a lock, so busy moments cannot overspend them.
  • Combo upgrades cost only the difference in price, and savings are calculated honestly.

Three kinds of promotion

  • Coupons: the customer enters a code (3 to 64 letters, digits, dashes or underscores).
  • Automatic: applied without a code when the order qualifies.
  • Happy hour: automatic, but only within set hours on set weekdays.

Each can be a percentage or a fixed amount, with an optional minimum order, maximum discount, total usage limit, budget and per-customer limit (one use per customer by default). A promotion can be limited to certain branches, categories or products, and to your website, your app or both.

How the discount for an order is chosen

  1. With a coupon code, only that coupon is considered. Without one, automatic and happy-hour promotions are.
  2. Each candidate must be active, within its dates, for the right branch and channel, and above its minimum order.
  3. The discount is calculated on the items it covers, then capped by its maximum and by the order subtotal.
  4. The largest discount wins. Promotions are not stacked.

Happy hour follows the branch's local clock, and a window that crosses midnight runs into the next day. Limits and budgets count both redeemed uses and uses held by open orders, and they are checked under a database lock, so two checkouts at the same moment cannot both take the last use.

Held while the order is open

When an order is placed, its promotion is reserved for as long as the order can still be paid (at least a day for deliveries). It is counted as used when the cash is confirmed or the restaurant approves the order, and released if the order is cancelled or never collected.

Daily combos, priced fairly

A combo has an advertised price, the weekdays it is offered and up to 30 slots. Each slot lists the items a customer can choose and a base price. Combos follow the restaurant's own calendar, so a Tuesday combo is offered on Tuesday in your city whatever the customer's phone says.

  • Choosing a pricier item in a slot costs only the difference from the slot's base price, plus any add-ons.
  • Every slot must be filled exactly once, and the server prices the combo from your price lists, never from the app.
  • The saving shown to the customer is what the same items would cost separately minus what they paid, and never less than zero.
  • Combo items stay as normal order lines, so stock, the kitchen display and order history work as usual.

A combo saving is already reflected in the price, so it does not also earn loyalty points.
